Reason The filing of this 1830 map of Chicago is said to mark the beginning of the municipality of Chicago, which would incorporate as a city later that decade. Leaving Springfield, Route 66 traversed Litchfield. The segment from Chicago to Springfield is roughly a 2.5 hour drive. From its beginning in Chicago, Route 66 headed southwest to Joliet, Wilmington, Dwight, Odell, Pontiac, Bloomington, Lincoln and Springfield.
